How Much Would You Invest in Yourself?

What would you invest into your peformances to make them successful?

$200,000? $300,000? $400,000? $500,000?!

You would probably answer no, and yet most musicians do invest between $200,000 and $500,000 (including education, recording, CDs, equipment, and general expenses) in their music careers hoping to make it big. Despite their investment though, most achieve only minimal success.

This is due to a variety of reasons including:

1. The artist spends money on second rate productions that are destined for failure. They don't do things right and are outshined by those who do.

It's like sending some kind in the local Little League to play in the World Series...

2. The artist invests in the wrong things.

Most artists fail to see the big picture and instead focus on what is the best for their finances at that very moment. These artists spend so much money (little dollars that turn into big dollars) trying to get in reach of their goals that by the time they actually get close, they are all "spent out."

Examples include crap gigs that might make them $200 (or less). While that might seem like a lot of money to some, taking something like this is just stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.

If you want to have a career that lasts, you've got to think long term. Like Mom always said, "Good things come to those who wait."

The good news is that if you do things right, you won't have to wait long.

3. They never take the time to be trained properly.

Most musicians have no idea how to effectively connect with the audience, so their career continues to decline.

This is especially true for off stage communication...

Those of you who follow my stuff know how much I stess being able to effectively communicate with your audience via email, direct mail, and other written communication. You must tell your audience what you want from them or they won't do it.

But same is true for your work on stage...

Musicians who are effective in their live performances are invited back more often, sell more product, get more people to sign up for their mailing lists, and make more money.
